Aryeh Frankfurter : A Step in Time.
Timeless and enchanting folk music for the soul.
Beginning in 2007, the focus of my musical craft began shifting away from the
Celtic harp to the Swedish nyckelharpa. This shift took a dramatic turn in 2012
when I was given the opportunity to purchase a nyckelharpa from Sören Åhker, an
eminent Swedish luthier. Inspired by the instrument, encouraged by listeners and
friends, and heeding my changing interests, my dedication to this instrument and
Swedish folk music has taken deeper root and grown more passionate than ever.
For this album I ventured to record Swedish tunes I have enjoyed over the years
without much regard to their popularity, accessibility or prior recorded
history. Nor would I limit myself to just traditional (public domain) melodies.
I happen to like new tunes and a good number I chose were composed by
contemporary musicians. Their music has been a gift to me and recording their
melodies would be something of my homage to them.
As always, I have strived to balance two somewhat competing energies: that of
paying attention to the tradition from which they came and how they are
traditionally played (Sweden), on the one hand, while also engaging the music
with a free artistic spirit according to my own tastes and sensibilities on the
other. Of course, my fondest hope is that you enjoy them as well.
