Johann Mattheson was a highly successful German contemporary of Bach, Telemann, and Handel. Like the latter two, he lived and worked in Hamburg, one of the great north-German cultural centres, and through marriage and employment also established a strong link with England. Mattheson and Handel actually worked together in their twenties, composing, directing, and performing in the Hamburg opera-house. A famous story recounted by Mattheson concerns a duel which the two rivals fought, which almost ended in Handel's premature death.

Johann Mattheson was a considerable composer, and we can tell that a number of his ideas were "borrowed" by Handel for his own music. Much of Mattheson's output perished in the bombing of Hamburg during World War II, but the exciting suites, here receiving their world premiere complete recording, survived, as they were published in 1714, both in Hamburg and London.
