Colin Booth : Mattheson - The Melodious Talking Fingers.
Solo harpsichord music.
This pioneering publication of 1735 was dedicated to Handel and probably inspired Bach to compose the Art of Fugue. There are twelve fugues interspersed with several dance-pieces. Mattheson was a very different, attractive character. He was celebrated for his writings, compositions, and for spearheading the musical life of his city of Hamburg. These are fugues for entertainment, not for deep study or development of technique. They are fun to listen to as well as to play, and contain great varieties of mood, from jokey gaiety to soulful introspection. Colin Booth transfers his mastery of fugues by J. S. Bach, to this more playful counterpoint by one of Bach's leading contemporaries.
