Counterpoint for One by Chris Britton Chris Britton : Counterpoint for One.
Virtuoso performances of bach on unaccompanied flute.

Music by Johann Sebastian Bach for unaccompanied violin and keyboard is presented here for the first time in these dazzling and virtuosic transcriptions for solo flute, along with Bach's only original work for the instrument, the Partita in A minor.

Having grown up in the era of 'switched-on' Bach, Chris Britton has long enjoyed playing Bach transcriptions on the flute. Bach himself was a great arranger of other composers' works, as well as his own. He was also clearly a great fan of the transverse flute (only then coming into its own as a solo instrument), to judge by the demanding and extensive parts he wrote for it in his great choral works, concertos and chamber music. Chris uses the modern Boehm-system flute rather than the Baroque traverso to cope with the large range of notes and expression required for the violin partitas and keyboard preludes. With judicious use of tone, phrasing and vibrato a bridge is formed between authentic Baroque interpretation and modern flute-playing.

The flute on this disc shows itself capable of much more than melodic interpretation: the suggested harmony and counterpoint of many instrumental lines also come within its grasp. The complex richness of Bach's music finds true expression on the humble flute, the purest and most ancient of instruments, thanks to technical progress and virtuosity.
