Chad Lawson : Summer Suite, Vol One.
Multi-award winning pianist and composer who is not afraid to put his hat in anything.
Chad Lawson's solo piano album, Summer Suite, strikes an evocative balance of
musical flow and visual metaphor. With economical accompaniment from
percussionist Jim Brock, Summer Suite unfurls in ten suite-like movements that
mirror not only the passage of the season, but in a deeper sense the passage of time, and how themes of mediation, rumination, freedom and play
can provide comfort, solace, and release.
Entirely improvised in a lone 31 minute session, Summer Suite appeals to
listeners in a personal way, each one able to add their unique interpretation as
the album evolves. To some, touches of a Bach fugue or a Bobby Timmons like jazz
cadence will be felt, to others, a rolling, Americana styled melody or East
European folk song will come to mind. There are also moments of twilight absorption, where stillness and meditation
are as powerful as a flurry of notes cascading across the musical landscape.
"Lawson pulls off something tricky with Summer Suite, engrossing the listener
with simple, involving melodies while also freeing him or her to let their minds
roam. Freedom is key as with the best memories of summer."
- Ken Micallef, DownBeat
