Daniel Estrem : The Classical Period on Ukulele and Guitar.
Colorful classical guitar.
The Classical period in Western music is generally accepted as being somewhere
between 1730 and 1820, with a style that emphasizes light elegance in place of
the Baroque's dignified seriousness and grandeur. The music is mainly
uncomplicated and intended to be performed with minimal rehearsal time. Mozart
writes about "the rehearsal", with the implication that his concerts would only
have one.
Two outstanding composers of the late eighteenth century are Franz Joseph Haydn
(1732-1809) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). They not only wrote in the
same idiom, but became personal friends, and each admired and was influenced by
the music of the other.
Mozart is represented on this recording with the well-known serenade "Eine
kleine Nachtmusik" originally written for small string orchestra. Haydn's
"Baryton Trios" were composed for a now-extinct instrument playing the lead
part. The baryton, a somewhat complicated instrument similar to a large viola da
gamba was equipped with an extra set of resonating metal strings for plucking in
addition to the main bowed strings. Haydn wrote nearly 200 pieces for the
baryton, mostly in trio combination with viola and cello. James Hook (1746-1827)
was a lesser-known English composer. His trio performed on this recording is
originally for three flutes. The tenor ukulele is the lead instrument on all of
the tracks on this album.
