Geoff Cawthorn : By the Sea.
Solo piano works.
By the Sea invites the listener into an emotionally evocative yet
unsentimental musical journey. There is a refreshing simplicity yet
sophistication to these improvised piano pieces that lingers in the air and the
ear.
Designed to play as music for contemplation or relaxation this collection of
musical musings works beautifully as background music yet rewards careful
attention.
Evocative soundclouds in the opening track, "Sky is Underwater", suggest a dark,
atmospheric journey till the gentle songlike quality of the follow up offers a
playful antidote and hints that this is an album of unexpected treasures. Each
piece states simple themes that give way to subtle improvisations, using jazz
scales and chords, creating deceptively complex musical journeys. Several
tracks, like the epic "Shifting Sands", use minimalist strategies, of ostinato
and repetition, to lay a sonic foundation for a circling cascade of thematic
variations.
The result is both mesmerising yet surprisingly energetic.
