Geoff Cawthorn : The Cat's Whiskers.
Solo piano works.
This is an album of rich variety, from moody jazz atmospherics, plaintive folksong, to stark minimalist stylings.
Playful, uplifting, with a sometimes crystalline beauty. This is the second album
of improvised piano music by Geoff Cawthorn, playing around with themes and
melodies that reflect a rich tapestry of emotions. Keeping things even more
simple and honest, these pieces use space and subtle changes in register to
present quiet yet forceful statements.
A number of pieces, such as Miles House and Night Garden were written as film
music, and evoke images and places, landscapes and emotional states.
Where most of the pieces are recorded live in one take "Night Garden" makes use
of overdubs and echo effects, creating a haunting soundtrack. Others, like "Time
in a Minor Key" and "Moon Cloud" push the music into an atmospheric, cinematic
space, drawing on jazz notes and chords.
