Heifervescent : Further Adventures in Monkeyland.
Shimmering indie guitar pop with orchestral moments.
Further Adventures in Monkeyland - Exploring the archives of unreleased demos from his days in Monkeyland, Andy re-recorded some of his first songs, trying to keep the original sentiments as far as production goes. The album has a synergy and collectively illustrates Andy's love of shimmering guitars soaked in reverb and delay on top of lush strings and walls of overdriven guitar sound.
Seed of Sin was originally laid down as a quick idea on a 4 track cassette. 15 years later it was finished and re-recorded and is probably more relevant now that Andy's obviously older with lyrics proclaiming "I still feel this young". A driving edgy guitar track full of apprehension.
Chase the Vagabonds explores the innocent sentiment of trying to hold onto a relationship by offering lots of promises. Chiming, shimmering echoey guitars mixed with big ambient vocals give this very melodic pop track an ethereal quality.
Rejuvenation cranks up the tempo and the guitar noise and talks hopefully about a brave new world. There's a few twists where the track virtually stops and then explodes again.
Figure 8 is a very catchy love song with jangly guitars, shuffle beats and a very simple chord structure.
The Furthest Outpost is more ethereal and builds up with suspense, into a huge wall of guitar sound. Again the sound focuses on hope and optimism, albeit in an escapist way.
All the Way to the Pit is a strange acoustic based bouncy track with an odd minor chord structure. The vocals talk in a more negative way about a relationship gone sour.
The heaviest of the tracks is Don't Die on Me - funky sequenced beats and baseline underlays big crunching guitars and a driving chorus line talking about not giving up in a desperate situation.
Big Mistake is one Andy's oldest songs - a simple descending chord structure, driven by acoustics and overlaid with ringing guitars, the song has a medium tempo and energy.
Vagrancy appeared on many Monkeyland recordings as a new wave punk style track, but this is the original feel which was more laid back and casual.
Eyesore, again appeared very differently to this on Monkeyland recordings with a funkier Madchester beat. This was the original flavour though - an ambient, gentle track with small bells and piano, talking about collateral damage in a war zone.
The Wooden Attraction is a short, fast paced indie guitar song, which was written simply about a wooden bench in Andy's hometown that was akin to a throne for the local idiot of the moment. Some great idiots have sat there and this song pays homage to them all.
Closer Than completes the album and this is a mysterious ethereal track that builds and falls all the way through and speaks about the everlasting life.
