Heifervescent : Murder in the Garden.
Shimmering indie guitar pop with orchestral moments.
Possibly the darkest of all of Heifervescent's albums, Murder in the Garden combines edgy guitars with big strings and orchestral sections to create some dark atmospheric alternative rock moments along with some shimmering pop.
The album starts quite upbeat with Bessie's secret, which probes behind the door of a seemingly sweet old lady who harbours a dark secret past. Crunching guitars over pacey acoustics.
Wonderful Thing ambles along at first with just rhythm guitar, bass and vocals until the chorus where everything joins the mix and the song paints a wonderful picture of the lover, given extra depth with the hammond organ and then horns and big symphonic strings.
Electric Towers is essentially a melodic indie rock song, combining overdriven guitars with delicate piano parts and organs, the words illustrating the beginning of the end of a relationship.
They've got tanks and everything has a sense of urgency with reverb soaked synth loops and punk drums and bass. The lyrics paint a picture of being surrounded and fear and anticipation.
Where I once was brings the tempo right down with an atmospheric period of reflection, reminiscing about good times. The echoey guitars and harmonies add to the ambience.
A disturbing look at the effects of war is brought to the table with Someone just took our babies. Ironically the song has quite a pleasant tempo and melody. The combination of pleasantries with the disturbing subject matter makes the song seem even darker.
Respond take the atmosphere even darker beginning with menacing laughter and deals with a person who has had the life sucked out of them. Heavy rock guitars join the mix and the track goes up from level to level until the wall of guitar sound that is the chorus.
The Diplomat is noise fuelled crashing alternative rock song with repeating riffs and focusing on the subject of diplomacy and avoiding making a decision.
Journey through the slugs keeps the heavy theme going but with the 60s style organ and upbeat melody, the track is actually a bizarre love song.
Murder in the Garden is a deep schizophrenic love song where the girl is told,
by her lover, that her lover is dead, as if he is another person. The words are
sincere and heartfelt and erupt into a powerful chorus where the lover admits he
had problems. The song is a roller coaster of delicate intricate acoustic
guitars and crashing distorted guitars.
