To Shorten Winter's Sadness is an Early Music album of 16th and 17th century music and songs for Christmas and Winter.

The programme consists of ballads, lute songs, carols, consort music, viol solos, madrigals and dance tunes. It follows the season from the coming of Winter to the melting of the ice, and shows the religious calendar from Advent to the beginning of Lent. It also describes many of the festive customs of the time including wassailing and New Year's gifts, with feasts and revels through the cold of winter, and fairs upon the frozen river.
