Tim Rayborn : Qadim.
Medieval and middle eastern music.
On Qadim, the amazing multi-instrumentalist Tim Rayborn is exploring the art of performance by a solo instrument—an art form that has a long and honored tradition in the Arabic world. The intimate focus of a single source of music provides a distinctly non-Western listening experience; the word "Qadim," in fact, is an Arabic one referring to music performed in an "old style", and according to traditional concepts. Two of the works here are among the oldest known written music: two songs from Ancient Greece invoke the muses, and there's a 3,500-year-old hymn to the Babylonian moon goddess Nikkal. Beautiful work, as usual, from the deeply talented Tim Rayborn.
Songs:
1. Laylat - oud (Turkish)
2. Empeza - psaltery (Sephardic Jewish)
3. Tamaddun - dutar (Uzbek)
4. Said - simsimiyya (Egyptian)
5. Alevlen - saz (Turkish)
6. Calliopeia - kithara (Ancient Greek)
7. Eladion - lauta (Greek Islands)
