Roots of Rebellion has been a busy, busy band. In the past couple of years, these guys?some of whom were not old enough to drive when the band formed in 2001?have not only played such legendary venues as The Stone Pony, CBGBs, and the Starland Ballroom, they opened for veteran prog rockers Kings X, won out over 198 other groups in a New York City area battle of the bands, organized several benefit shows for Katrina and tsunami victims, were nominated "Best Young Band" in the Asbury Music Awards, and in their copious spare time, recorded the excellent Surfacing, a full length melodic hard rock album featuring the incredible "Declaration" track?a powerful anthem to living as your authentic self. The entire album bristles with messages about the importance of honesty and self-empowerment, in fact. frontman John Penola's voice is passionate, angry, undeceived, crystal clear: get back to your roots, he seems to be saying on this album. We hear you John! Other standouts include "Messenger" and "I Am."
