La Superbe by Thomas Walker Thomas Walker : La Superbe.
Lute music of 17th century france and italy.

Art music circa 1600 was morphing from a deeply cerebral expression of counterpoint into a form that featured more clearly delineated melody and bass lines, and the dance forms were rivaling the more abstract fantasias in sophistication, and in fact dominate the French lute literature. The French in particularly, at this time, were in love with the sound of the instrument and changed its tuning to exploit it and match to the new musical forms.

Francois Dufault was among the first to experiment in these new tunings, settling later on the distinctive d-minor tuning (the top six courses of the lute sound a d minor chord) that came to define the Baroque lute, and is heard on this recording. Esaias Reusner, the Younger may have been Dufault's pupil, and certainly was his imitator, although one can also hear clear evolution even as he draws inspiration from his teacher's style. Both composers capture the subtle, elusive, and improvisatory feel of the art of the lute in 17th century France.
