Magnatune box of all sorts

Four releases across different genres today, with the welcome addition of hip hop as a genre.

- Very, very groovy instrumental funk from the Jive Ass Sleepers.

- Bach on 8 string guitar by Daniel Estrem. With the range of the extra two strings (as on a lute) and the use of overdubbing, Estrem manages to preserve the lines of the original works while re-performing them on the guitar. New intabulations by Estrem make these works feel native to the guitar. Very cleanly and fluidly played.

- High energy surf rock, with elements of Pink Floyd/King Crimson-esque musical sophistication, from Blue Wave Theory. Getting us all in the mood for Summer.

- Our second hip hop artist on Magnatune, but the first in quite a few years. The Block Scholars impressed me with the quality of musicianship, production and lyrical content.

At Magnatune, we've never received many submissions in the hip hop genre and consequently had few releases. For some reason, our new all-electronic submission process (at http://a.magnatune.com) has prompted a huge increase in submissions, which is why we can now do high quality weekly releases. One benefit of this is much more hip hop being submitted. Besides the Block Scholars, we have two more excellent hip hop albums in the pipeline for the next few weeks.

Of course, if something we release isn't a genre you like, feel free to ignore it. Or, take a dip and see if it excites something in you!

Description:chilled out grooves & uptempo funkathons
Genre:Jazz
Artist:Jive Ass Sleepers
Album:Scratch

Album number three sees further adventures into jazz and funk, this time also exploring elements of reggae, latin and even some turntable scratching. The grooves are mostly laid back but still funky enough to make you want to dance. Electric guitar is predominantly featured, weaving jazzy, melodic lines over some solid drums, bass, keyboards and horns.

Description:Bach on classical guitar
Genre:Classical
Artist:Daniel Estrem
Album:JS Bach on 8 string guitar, vol 1

The more I study and play the music of J. S. Bach the more I realize how incredibly adept he was at assimilating a variety of styles and somehow making it all his own. Each piece has its own unique flavor and when listening to a lot of western music written after Bach's time (regardless of genre) much of it seems to be derived from the master.

The 8-string allowed me to preserve the intervals and keep the music true to the composer's intentions. The only way for me to maintain Bach's polyphonic lines was to multi-track 2 or 3 parts. Most of the pieces required the time-consuming task of transposing the music into guitar-compatible keys. I used an 8-string guitar made by Stephen Kakos for the lower notes and a 6-string guitar made by German Vazquez Rubio for the higher end.

Description:high-energy surf-inspired instrumental rock
Genre:Rock
Artist:Blue Wave Theory
Album:Blue Wave Theory

Surf Rock dominated by the musical impressions of sand, sun, and crashing waves, sneaking in the occasional odd time signature, and using the cavernous roar of the mighty reverb tank.

The album starts off in a decidedly retro-esque Dick Dale / Pulp Fiction vein with "Gumby Goes Green" and then immediately takes a left turn with the more progressive "Huckster", featuring a lengthy drum solo workout, and a surreal space jam. Other tracks, like the psychedelic "Mermaid in Japan", venture into Mermen territory by way of Pink Floyd - you can almost get stoned just by listening, and you can almost hear the guitar pick disintegrating. The moody riff of "Labyrinth" is reminiscent of early King Crimson's more mathematical moments, adding the pomp and big chord drama of progressive metal during the transitions. The album ends by returning to a more traditional surf sound with "Skyhawk Beach" and the punk-inspired "Road Hazard".

Description:not your "Average" Hip Hop Group
Genre:Rock
Artist:Block Scholars
Album:Weather the Storm

Block Scholars was named officially in 2008 from the combination of the artists; 2mental (Nathan Andreas), NOBULL (Bennett Baskerville) and Slimdog of Slimdog Productions (David Bell Jr.). Both 2mental & NOBULL have worked on separate projects with Slimdog Productions, but all decided to become a force to be reckoned with in 2008, with one goal: To bring real Hip Hop back to the forefront of the music industry with their own unique style. The theme throughout the compilation shines even more today than in 2008: We may go through life's struggles, but with perseverance and the right choices, we can bring a positive outlook in our futures.
