American Bach Soloists : JS Bach - Transcriptions of Italian Music.
Virtuosic bach performances and more.
Listen to the willowy, gorgeously airy introduction to American Bach Soloists' Transcriptions of Italian Music, and you'll instantly understand why this group has received such fanfare in the classical music world and beyond. The precision and unity they've achieved as an ensemble is arresting, and yet they always keep the music vibrant and emotive. Bach used Vivaldi as a model for the opening concerto for four harpsichords; it's wonderfully bright and lively. Then ABS shifts gears for the opening verse of Bach's adaptation of Pergolesi's work; the more sensitive Psalm 51 features the buttery voices of soprano Benita Valente and alto Judith Malafronte in perfect concert and sympathy with one another. And although Bach turned the original Latin poem about the compassion of Mary at the foot of the cross into an unmistakably German one--in conductor Jeffrey Thomas' words-- about "the sorrow and contrition of an unworthy sinner," it receives layers of Bach's brilliance that renders it, in many ways, a fuller and more active incarnation of the music.
