David Gilden : Jato the Lion.
African kora and mbira mixed with keyboards infuse a modern feel into ancient world music traditions.
A peaceful and meditative collection of traditional West African folk melodies
played on the 21 string kora. Tittle track features a kora and piano duet, with
both parts played by David Gilden.
The music presented on these two releases comes from several mid 80s recording
sessions that took place in Boston. Featured are tracks from Gilden's first recordings from
his first albums: 'Kora I' and 'Kora II'. These were originally released between
1984 and 1985 on cassette.
In 1986 Gilden went back into the studio to record additional tracks for the release
of Jato and Distant Strings. The music on Distant Strings and Jato was
thoroughly remastered by a top mastering engineer in NYC. Low Level noise (pops
& clicks) have been painstaking removed, endings have been cleaned up, the track
to track ambiances have been balanced. Even the title track "Jato" was a given
dynamic detail that was missing from the original release. This is first time
these studio performances have been heard with such clarity.
