Daniel Estrem : Classical Ukulele.
Colorful classical guitar.
This recording features a number of pieces by Adrian Le Roy and Alonso Mudarra
written for the Renaissance guitar which date to around 1550 as well as
transcriptions of Renaissance lute pieces mixed with Baroque and Romantic works.
The seven Telemann ukulele duets are from his Canonic Sonatas (for two recorders
or two violins). The melody in these duets is played by the first instrument and
then exactly repeated by the second instrument after a selected interval of
time.
The ukulele is a miniature member of the guitar family that was brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants in the latter half of the 19th century. It was
based on the design of the machete, a four-stringed instrument from the island
of Madeira (also noted for its wine).
In Hawaii and elsewhere the ukulele has traditionally held the role of an
accompaniment instrument, strumming simple repetitive chords. But there is
documentation that the ancestor of the ukulele was also used to play complex
classical instrumental music. Some scholars believe the machete was a descendant
of the small Renaissance guitar, which had four double-strings (courses) tuned
similarly to the machete and ukulele.
