Vito Paternoster : Solo cello works by JS Bach, CPE Bach, Biber and Paternoster.
Cellist extraordinaire.
As Bach emphasized in his own Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello, the practice of cello solo
combines different meanings: monody and polyphony, tonality and modality, the
ancient and the modern.
Vito Paternoster's cello is like an expressive universe
which doesn't need any accompaniment. It is a great challenge to pull this off.
Johann Sebastian Bach, Partita in D minor - this piece represents the transcription for cello of the renowned
Partita in A minor for flute solo (BMV 1013) which Bach composed at the time when he
worked at Koetchen Court, and is undoubtedly one of the best period of his life.
This is coincident with the Suites for solo cello and with the Sonatas and Partitas
for solo violin which represent the highest example of "stile concitato".
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Sonata in F major for solo cello: this is the
transcription for cello of the Sonata for flute and harpsichord in C major, a
virtuosic flute masterpiece, for the first time performed by cello .
Carl
Philipp Emanuel Bach, Sonata in D minor for solo cello: this transcription of the
Sonata in A minor for solo flute represents one of the best examples of
unaccompanied sonatas.
Heinrich Franz Ignaz Biber, Passacaglia in C minor for solo cello: this is the
last of a series of sonatas Biber composed for solo violin (here transcribed for
cello), each of them corresponds to one of the Mysteries of the Rosary. The
Passacaglia had its origins in a Spanish dance (from the Spanish pasar, to walk,
and calle, street; which means to go beyond the limits) and it consists of a series
of continuous variations over a bass, with a strong hypnotic power.
Vito Paternoster, La Monica: this is a medieval-inspired passacaglia as well,
with a set of continuous variations, increasingly arduous and polyphonic.
Vito Paternoster, The Spiritual Combat: inspired by the 17th-century homonymous
Lorenzo Scupoli's bestseller (it was diffused more than the Bible and became
soon a model of living and spiritual education during the Counter-Reformation),
this suite starts maintaining a single note (D, that's RE in Italian, a
polysemic word meaning also King) representing the Oneness around which a series
of themes revolves, both rhythmically and melodically, in order to represent the
fickle World.
