With a name taken from a morally questionable character in a David Lynch film,
one might say that Uncle Pooch is a little twisted. This eccentric quartet has
been described as Slayer meets Pharoah Sanders' evil twin. They turn heavy,
sludgy grooves into quick-fingered riffs while disturbing melodies and noise
scar your psyche. This blatant disregard for normalcy is what they've dubbed
instrumental/metal/jazz or, "Experi-Metal".
The Seattle based group was founded by guitarist Tony Stevens and bassist Shane
Smith in 2007. Filling out the roster is avant-garde saxophonist Greg Sinibaldi
(Frieze of Life) wielding the Electronic Wind Instrument, and drummer Denali
Williams (Staxx Brothers).
After signing a non-exclusive deal with internet label Magnatune, Uncle Pooch
released its debut album "Conduct Unbecoming". The full-length album includes
guest appearances by vocalist Kimo Muraki (17th Chapter) and guitarist RL Heyer
(RL Heyer Trio, Flowmotion). It features the Naked City-esque track "Assault and
Battery Acid", the epic middle-eastern slammer, "Fallujah" and the bone-crushing
"Shame Spiral" which in the end is swallowed by a swamp of feedback and
thousands of strange little critters.
