When I was a teenager, taking classical guitar lessons and discovering acoustic steel-string guitar, guitarist Michael Hedges was my absolute hero. The sounds that Michael Hedges managed to produce from just one acoustic guitar during the 1980's were both unprecedented and awe-inspiring. Many people couldn't believe his solo albums Breakfast in the Field and Aerial Boundaries were recorded without overdubs.\n\nThe music on this album Reminiscence is like a suite with five movements on solo acoustic guitar. The pieces were written between 1994 and 2003 and I tried to create my own magic from what I'd heard on the albums of Michael Hedges and other so-called finger style guitarists like Alex de Grassi.\n\nThis album kicks off with a rather virtuoso prelude and then continues with Reminiscence: a work inspired by memories of my childhood. (While composing this piece, I could almost hear the children's voices on the schoolyard in my mind.) The Peasant Wedding is a lively jig (an Irish dance) and depicts festivities and people dancing from the past. Avond in Schaddeberge is a Dutch title meaning Evening in (the village of) Schaddeberge. A friend of mine unsuccessfully tried to find Schaddeberge on Google Maps, until I told him the village name was made-up. I had used the name in a children's story I was writing. The suite closes with Finale, a rhythmic piece with strumming and percussive effects.\n\nIf you're a guitar enthusiast you can download and play the guitar TABs of this album from MusicaNeo: http://emielstopler.musicaneo.com/sheetmusic/?cat=4599", "release_date" : "2014-11-01", "genres" : ["Alt Rock","Folk","Instrumental Rock"], "collections" : [{ "name" : "Acoustic Guitar", "slug" : "acoustic_guitar", "web_url" : "https://magnatune.com/collections/acoustic_guitar" },{ "name" : "Acoustic Rock", "slug" : "acoustic_rock", "web_url" : "https://magnatune.com/collections/acoustic_rock" },{ "name" : "Daydreaming", "slug" : "daydreaming", "web_url" : "https://magnatune.com/collections/daydreaming" }], "vocals" : "instrumental", "moods" : ["nostalgic","reflective","dreamy","peaceful","tender"], "uses" : ["emotional storytelling","slideshow or memories","podcast background","documentary","meditation or yoga","study or focus"], "energy" : 2, "instrumentation" : ["acoustic guitar","solo acoustic guitar","fingerstyle guitar","percussive guitar effects"], "sounds_like" : ["Michael Hedges","Alex de Grassi"], "summary" : "Solo acoustic fingerstyle guitar pieces evoking childhood memories and pastoral scenes; ideal for reflective, nostalgic, or calm background use in videos and podcasts.", "duration_seconds" : 799, "tracks" : [{ "track" : 1, "track_no" : 1, "name" : "Prelude", "duration_seconds" : 117, "duration" : "1:57", "vocals" : "instrumental", "bpm_approx" : 136, "preview_mp3" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Emiel%20Stopler/Reminiscence/01-Prelude-Emiel%20Stopler_spoken.mp3", "preview_opus" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Emiel%20Stopler/Reminiscence/01-Prelude-Emiel%20Stopler_spoken.opus", "free_download" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/emielstopler-reminiscence/tracks/1/file?format=mp3", "api_url" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/emielstopler-reminiscence/tracks/1" },{ "track" : 2, "track_no" : 2, "name" : "Reminiscence", "duration_seconds" : 182, "duration" : "3:02", "vocals" : "instrumental", "bpm_approx" : 98, "preview_mp3" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Emiel%20Stopler/Reminiscence/02-Reminiscence-Emiel%20Stopler_spoken.mp3", "preview_opus" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Emiel%20Stopler/Reminiscence/02-Reminiscence-Emiel%20Stopler_spoken.opus", "free_download" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/emielstopler-reminiscence/tracks/2/file?format=mp3", "api_url" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/emielstopler-reminiscence/tracks/2" },{ "track" : 3, "track_no" : 3, "name" : "The Peasant Wedding", "duration_seconds" : 129, "duration" : "2:09", "vocals" : "instrumental", "bpm_approx" : 128, "preview_mp3" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Emiel%20Stopler/Reminiscence/03-The%20Peasant%20Wedding-Emiel%20Stopler_spoken.mp3", "preview_opus" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Emiel%20Stopler/Reminiscence/03-The%20Peasant%20Wedding-Emiel%20Stopler_spoken.opus", "free_download" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/emielstopler-reminiscence/tracks/3/file?format=mp3", "api_url" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/emielstopler-reminiscence/tracks/3" },{ "track" : 4, "track_no" : 4, "name" : "Avond in Schaddeberge", "duration_seconds" : 144, "duration" : "2:24", "vocals" : "instrumental", "bpm_approx" : 105, "preview_mp3" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Emiel%20Stopler/Reminiscence/04-Avond%20in%20Schaddeberge-Emiel%20Stopler_spoken.mp3", "preview_opus" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Emiel%20Stopler/Reminiscence/04-Avond%20in%20Schaddeberge-Emiel%20Stopler_spoken.opus", "free_download" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/emielstopler-reminiscence/tracks/4/file?format=mp3", "api_url" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/emielstopler-reminiscence/tracks/4" },{ "track" : 5, "track_no" : 5, "name" : "Finale", "duration_seconds" : 227, "duration" : "3:47", "vocals" : "instrumental", "bpm_approx" : 98, "preview_mp3" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Emiel%20Stopler/Reminiscence/05-Finale-Emiel%20Stopler_spoken.mp3", "preview_opus" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Emiel%20Stopler/Reminiscence/05-Finale-Emiel%20Stopler_spoken.opus", "free_download" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/emielstopler-reminiscence/tracks/5/file?format=mp3", "api_url" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/emielstopler-reminiscence/tracks/5" }], "previews_note" : "preview_mp3 (and an album's preview_opus and free_download) is the free version: the whole song with a short spoken Magnatune voice every 30 seconds, for use only under CC BY-NC-SA 1.0 (non-commercial, credit, share alike).
