His teacher wrote in an Aquaman notebook.\n\nToday Dan is an accomplished producer, pianist and composer, having performed both solo and with bands in the Boston, Albuquerque and Baltimore/Washington areas. His music has been featured in various media, from album compilations to TV and web/terrestrial radio stations.\n\nIn 2010, Dan created Made of Wood, a chillout funk project. The music is created using a range of acoustic and electronic, live and sampled sounds. Many of the sampled sounds come from alterations of his own performances.\n\nThe inspirations for the sounds are wide-ranging: from Thievery Corporation and Massive Attack, to the Meters, Parliament Funkadelic, Radiohead and Air. Dan also draws from his classical background and classic film composers, such as Lalo Schifrin.\n\nIn Feb 2012, Dan released The Chill/Funk Trip. The album has led to Made of Wood being a \"Top 10 Emerging Artist,\" (jango.com) and the album has received glowing reviews. Currently he is working on \"Narcotherapy Hypnosis,\" an album that fuses the styles of the 60's and 70's with trippy old-school synth sounds and modern percussion.\n\nDan currently lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.", "photo" : "https://magnatune.com/artists/img/made_of_wood.jpg", "web_url" : "https://magnatune.com/artists/made_of_wood/", "albums" : [{ "sku" : "madeofwood-narcotherapyhypnosis", "name" : "Narcotherapy Hypnosis", "artist" : { "name" : "Made of Wood", "page" : "made_of_wood" }, "release_date" : "2015-01-20", "genres" : ["Jazz","Funk"], "vocals" : "vocals", "moods" : ["nostalgic","mysterious","hypnotic","groovy","dreamy","suspenseful"], "uses" : ["film score","trailer","period drama or history","sci-fi or space","podcast background","emotional storytelling"], "energy" : 3, "instrumentation" : ["wurlitzers","clavinet","horns","retro-synths"], "sounds_like" : [], "summary" : "Instrumental chillout funk with nostalgic 60s/70s spy-movie vibes, retro synths, and funky grooves—ideal for film scores, trailers, and atmospheric podcast backgrounds.", "cover" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Made%20of%20Wood/Narcotherapy%20Hypnosis/cover_400.jpg", "web_url" : "https://magnatune.com/artists/albums/madeofwood-narcotherapyhypnosis/", "api_url" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/madeofwood-narcotherapyhypnosis", "buy_url" : "https://magnatune.com/buy/album?sku=madeofwood-narcotherapyhypnosis" },{ "sku" : "madeofwood-birdstate", "name" : "Birds of the State Fair", "artist" : { "name" : "Made of Wood", "page" : "made_of_wood" }, "release_date" : "2013-04-28", "genres" : ["World","Alt Rock"], "vocals" : "vocals", "moods" : ["groovy","playful","quirky","funky","uplifting"], "uses" : ["vlog","road trip","cafe or restaurant","lounge or bar","podcast background","emotional storytelling"], "energy" : 3, "instrumentation" : ["piano","upright bass","electronic samples","electronic beats"], "sounds_like" : [], "summary" : "Groove-laden chillout funk with organic instruments and electronic elements, ideal for relaxed, engaging, or subtly energetic background scoring.", "cover" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Made%20of%20Wood/Birds%20of%20the%20State%20Fair/cover_400.jpg", "web_url" : "https://magnatune.com/artists/albums/madeofwood-birdstate/", "api_url" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/madeofwood-birdstate", "buy_url" : "https://magnatune.com/buy/album?sku=madeofwood-birdstate" },{ "sku" : "madeofwood-chillfunk", "name" : "The Chill Funk Trip", "artist" : { "name" : "Made of Wood", "page" : "made_of_wood" }, "release_date" : "2013-01-26", "genres" : ["Jazz","Funk"], "vocals" : "vocals", "moods" : ["dreamy","funky","groovy"], "uses" : ["lounge or bar","cafe or restaurant","podcast background","sci-fi or space","travel","emotional storytelling"], "energy" : 3, "instrumentation" : ["funk bass","smooth synths","jazz-inflected keys","laid-back drums","male vocals"], "sounds_like" : [], "summary" : "Groove-laden chillout funk with spacey, dreamy, and atmospheric jazz-funk vibes—ideal for lounge settings, sci-fi themes, or relaxed podcast backgrounds.", "cover" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Made%20of%20Wood/The%20Chill%20Funk%20Trip/cover_400.jpg", "web_url" : "https://magnatune.com/artists/albums/madeofwood-chillfunk/", "api_url" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/madeofwood-chillfunk", "buy_url" : "https://magnatune.com/buy/album?sku=madeofwood-chillfunk" }] }, "license" : { "music_license" : "Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 1.0 (CC BY-NC-SA 1.0)", "music_license_url" : "https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/1.0/", "listening" : "Stream the free previews, or buy an album for $8 to download it in MP3, AAC, ALAC, FLAC, OGG or WAV. 100% of the price goes to the musician.", "non_commercial" : "Non-commercial projects may use the music under CC BY-NC-SA 1.0: credit the artist and Magnatune, and share alike.", "projects" : "Magnatune members may use any Magnatune music in their projects, commercial or not (videos, films, podcasts, games, apps, websites, adverts), including work for clients, under the Magnatune Project Licence.
