John's music ranges from radio-friendly nostalgic techno influenced beats to microtonal soundscapes, trance-inducing generative works, and beyond. prettyhowtown has been featured on WNUR 89.3FM (Chicago), and he appeared as guest artist on Open Lab Radio's Beyond Corners on 89.9FM Ibiza and Formentera (Spain).\n\nJohn is primarily a performance artist and frequently plays in clubs and at music festivals. Using no computers, samplers, or other modern musical aids, John improvises music on the fly using the knobs, switches and wires on the instrument itself. The result is a journey of exploration for artist and audience alike.\n\nprettyhowtown's recorded music is made the same way: every track was recorded live to a stereo recorder, usually in one take, and is presented without editing. John feels this best preserves the spirit of his music: intensely, spiritually, and imperfectly made by a man rather than a machine.\n\nYou can find more information about prettyhowtown here.", "photo" : "https://magnatune.com/artists/img/prettyhowtown_low.jpg", "web_url" : "https://magnatune.com/artists/prettyhowtown/", "albums" : [{ "sku" : "prettyhowtown-hydrogenbeta", "name" : "hydrogen beta", "artist" : { "name" : "prettyhowtown", "page" : "prettyhowtown" }, "release_date" : "2016-04-05", "genres" : ["Ambient","Experimental"], "vocals" : "instrumental", "moods" : ["dreamy","calm","meditative","ethereal","peaceful","mysterious"], "uses" : ["sci-fi or space","meditation or yoga","spa or massage","study or focus","podcast background","nature documentary"], "energy" : 1, "instrumentation" : ["modular synthesizer","ambient electronic textures","live electronic performance","minimal vocals"], "sounds_like" : [], "summary" : "A 67-minute live, unedited ambient electronic piece evoking suspended time and space, ideal for sci-fi, meditation, or focused listening.", "cover" : "https://magnatune.com/music/prettyhowtown/hydrogen%20beta/cover_400.jpg", "web_url" : "https://magnatune.com/artists/albums/prettyhowtown-hydrogenbeta/", "api_url" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/prettyhowtown-hydrogenbeta", "buy_url" : "https://magnatune.com/buy/album?sku=prettyhowtown-hydrogenbeta" },{ "sku" : "prettyhowtown-hydrogenalpha", "name" : "hydrogen alpha", "artist" : { "name" : "prettyhowtown", "page" : "prettyhowtown" }, "release_date" : "2016-01-02", "genres" : ["Electronica","Ambient"], "vocals" : "instrumental", "moods" : ["playful","nostalgic","dreamy","mysterious","reflective","calm"], "uses" : ["podcast background","meditation or yoga","spa or massage","study or focus","emotional storytelling","nature documentary"], "energy" : 2, "instrumentation" : ["modular synthesizer","live electronic performance","melodic ambient textures","microtonal mariachi-inspired riffs","nostalgic beats"], "sounds_like" : [], "summary" : "Playful, nostalgic, and dreamy hand-made ambient electronic music performed live on a modular synth, ideal for calming background in podcasts, meditation, or nature documentaries.", "cover" : "https://magnatune.com/music/prettyhowtown/hydrogen%20alpha/cover_400.jpg", "web_url" : "https://magnatune.com/artists/albums/prettyhowtown-hydrogenalpha/", "api_url" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/prettyhowtown-hydrogenalpha", "buy_url" : "https://magnatune.com/buy/album?sku=prettyhowtown-hydrogenalpha" },{ "sku" : "prettyhowtown-helium", "name" : "helium", "artist" : { "name" : "prettyhowtown", "page" : "prettyhowtown" }, "release_date" : "2015-09-11", "genres" : ["Ambient","New Age"], "vocals" : "instrumental", "moods" : ["peaceful","calm","dreamy","meditative","reflective"], "uses" : ["meditation or yoga","spa or massage","study or focus","podcast background","emotional storytelling"], "energy" : 1, "instrumentation" : ["modular synthesizer","ambient electronic textures","live electronic performance","vocal layers"], "sounds_like" : [], "summary" : "Hand-made ambient electronic music created live on a custom modular synthesizer, ideal for tranquil evenings, quiet reflection, or calming background in podcasts and wellness contexts.", "cover" : "https://magnatune.com/music/prettyhowtown/helium/cover_400.jpg", "web_url" : "https://magnatune.com/artists/albums/prettyhowtown-helium/", "api_url" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/prettyhowtown-helium", "buy_url" : "https://magnatune.com/buy/album?sku=prettyhowtown-helium" }] }, "license" : { "music_license" : "Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 1.0 (CC BY-NC-SA 1.0)", "music_license_url" : "https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/1.0/", "listening" : "Stream the free previews, or buy an album for $8 to download it in MP3, AAC, ALAC, FLAC, OGG or WAV. 100% of the price goes to the musician.", "non_commercial" : "Non-commercial projects may use the music under CC BY-NC-SA 1.0: credit the artist and Magnatune, and share alike.", "projects" : "Magnatune members may use any Magnatune music in their projects, commercial or not (videos, films, podcasts, games, apps, websites, adverts), including work for clients, under the Magnatune Project Licence.
