{ "ok" : true, "artist" : { "name" : "Roots of Rebellion", "page" : "ror", "description" : "melodic modern hard rock", "location" : "NJ, USA", "bio" : "Roots of Rebellion hails from Kinnelon, New Jersey, in the heart of the Northern Jersey metro rock scene. Formed in 2001, the band's unconventional hard rock combines melodic keyboard and vocals over complex rhythms and chords, creating a unique rock sound that is equally appropriate on the dance floor, car radio and mosh pit.\n\nTheir debut album, The Looking Glass (2004), co-produced by the band and veteran sound engineer Tony Van Hoorn (recorded Phil Ramone, Ray Charles, Rick Derringer, Southside Johnny) combines a surprising collection of tracks, each significantly different from the others.\n\nComprised of eight songs, The Looking Glass is infectious from the first song, The Order, to the last, Messenger.\n\nThe complex musical progressions in each song are complimented by lead singer John Penola's introspective, yet ambiguous lyrics.\n\nSwaying between kinetic choruses and somber verses, the album takes on the difficult task of pleasing both the hardest rocker and those who must find a melody and meaningful lyrics to appreciate a band's talents.\n\nThe four piece band is composed of singer/keyboardist John Penola; guitarist Tyler Bissell; drummer/vocalist Kurt Wubbenhorst and bassist Rob Struck.", "photo" : "https://magnatune.com/artists/img/ror5.jpg", "web_url" : "https://magnatune.com/artists/ror/", "albums" : [{ "sku" : "rootsrebel-lookingnv", "name" : "The Looking Glass (vocals removed)", "artist" : { "name" : "Roots of Rebellion", "page" : "ror" }, "release_date" : "2026-10-23", "genres" : ["Hard Rock","Rock"], "vocals" : "vocals removed", "moods" : ["energetic","driving","aggressive","dramatic","heroic","tense"], "uses" : ["sports or action","trailer","gaming","corporate","tech or product demo","podcast intro or outro"], "energy" : 5, "instrumentation" : ["electric guitar","drums","bass","male vocals"], "sounds_like" : [], "summary" : "Melodic modern hard rock with driving rhythms and powerful vocals, ideal for high-energy video intros, trailers, and action-oriented content.", "cover" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Roots%20of%20Rebellion/The%20Looking%20Glass%20(vocals%20removed)/cover_400.jpg", "web_url" : "https://magnatune.com/artists/albums/rootsrebel-lookingnv/", "api_url" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/rootsrebel-lookingnv", "buy_url" : "https://magnatune.com/buy/album?sku=rootsrebel-lookingnv" },{ "sku" : "rootsrebel-surfacingnv", "name" : "Surfacing (vocals removed)", "artist" : { "name" : "Roots of Rebellion", "page" : "ror" }, "release_date" : "2026-10-23", "genres" : ["Hard Rock","Rock"], "vocals" : "vocals removed", "moods" : ["inspiring","energetic","dramatic","heroic","aggressive","hopeful"], "uses" : ["sports or action","trailer","gaming","workout or fitness","emotional storytelling","podcast intro or outro"], "energy" : 5, "instrumentation" : ["electric guitar","drums","bass","male vocals"], "sounds_like" : [], "summary" : "A melodic modern hard rock album with passionate, clear male vocals and anthemic songs about honesty and self-empowerment, ideal for high-energy or emotionally charged video projects.", "cover" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Roots%20of%20Rebellion/Surfacing%20(vocals%20removed)/cover_400.jpg", "web_url" : "https://magnatune.com/artists/albums/rootsrebel-surfacingnv/", "api_url" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/rootsrebel-surfacingnv", "buy_url" : "https://magnatune.com/buy/album?sku=rootsrebel-surfacingnv" },{ "sku" : "rootsrebel-surfacing", "name" : "Surfacing", "artist" : { "name" : "Roots of Rebellion", "page" : "ror" }, "release_date" : "2007-02-17", "genres" : ["Hard Rock","Rock"], "vocals" : "vocals", "moods" : ["inspiring","energetic","dramatic","heroic","aggressive","hopeful"], "uses" : ["sports or action","trailer","gaming","workout or fitness","emotional storytelling","podcast intro or outro"], "energy" : 5, "instrumentation" : ["electric guitar","drums","bass","male vocals"], "sounds_like" : [], "summary" : "A melodic modern hard rock album with passionate, clear male vocals and anthemic songs about honesty and self-empowerment, ideal for high-energy or emotionally charged video projects.", "cover" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Roots%20of%20Rebellion/Surfacing/cover_400.jpg", "web_url" : "https://magnatune.com/artists/albums/rootsrebel-surfacing/", "api_url" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/rootsrebel-surfacing", "buy_url" : "https://magnatune.com/buy/album?sku=rootsrebel-surfacing" },{ "sku" : "rootsrebel-looking", "name" : "The Looking Glass", "artist" : { "name" : "Roots of Rebellion", "page" : "ror" }, "release_date" : "2004-03-07", "genres" : ["Hard Rock","Rock"], "vocals" : "vocals", "moods" : ["energetic","driving","aggressive","dramatic","heroic","tense"], "uses" : ["sports or action","trailer","gaming","corporate","tech or product demo","podcast intro or outro"], "energy" : 5, "instrumentation" : ["electric guitar","drums","bass","male vocals"], "sounds_like" : [], "summary" : "Melodic modern hard rock with driving rhythms and powerful vocals, ideal for high-energy video intros, trailers, and action-oriented content.", "cover" : "https://magnatune.com/music/Roots%20of%20Rebellion/The%20Looking%20Glass/cover_400.jpg", "web_url" : "https://magnatune.com/artists/albums/rootsrebel-looking/", "api_url" : "https://magnatune.com/api/albums/rootsrebel-looking", "buy_url" : "https://magnatune.com/buy/album?sku=rootsrebel-looking" }] }, "license" : { "music_license" : "Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 1.0 (CC BY-NC-SA 1.0)", "music_license_url" : "https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/1.0/", "listening" : "Stream the free previews, or buy an album for $8 to download it in MP3, AAC, ALAC, FLAC, OGG or WAV. 100% of the price goes to the musician.", "non_commercial" : "Non-commercial projects may use the music under CC BY-NC-SA 1.0: credit the artist and Magnatune, and share alike.", "projects" : "Magnatune members may use any Magnatune music in their projects, commercial or not (videos, films, podcasts, games, apps, websites, adverts), including work for clients, under the Magnatune Project Licence.
