The Stroj collective gathered in 1997 when a group of percussionists,
craftsmen and musicians from Slovenia realized an idea to create a huge mechanical sound
machine that sounds like an articulated noise orchestra, driven by hypnotic rhythms
and powered with bodily energy.
Name The Stroj comes from a Slovenian word 'stroj' (pronounced as 'stroy') which
means 'machine'. Therefore THE STROJ is a pun, playing with two meanings:
machine and destruction.
The roots of their musical expression can be traced to an alternative scene from ex
Yugoslavia in the early 80's (Borghesia, Laibach) and their live acts reflect
a daring DIY attitude of musical pioneers like EinsturzendeNeubauten or Les
Tambours du Bronx.
In almost two decades The Stroj have released four albums and performed all over
Europe, UK and Singapore. They are regular guests of festivals and special
events held in unusual venues like abandoned factories, ships, castles, mines
and railway museums.
Their music is based on expressive and complex rhythmical structures,
complemented by electronically manipulated field recordings, various electronic
devices and odd electromechanical equipment.
