# Magnatune

> Magnatune is an independent, not-evil record label and music service. Its catalog of over 1,900 albums by over 700 musicians runs from classical, baroque and early music to ambient, electronica, jazz, world and rock. Every track can be streamed free as a preview, and any album can be bought for $8: 100% of the price goes to the musician.

## Finding music

- A free, read-only JSON API covers the whole catalog: https://magnatune.com/api/ (guide), with an [OpenAPI description](https://magnatune.com/api/openapi.json).
- Search: `GET /api/albums?q=piano`. Filter by `genre=` (`GET /api/genres`), `collection=` (`GET /api/collections`) or `artist=`, and `sort=popular|new|name`.
- One album: `GET /api/albums/{sku}` gives its tracks with durations and free preview streams (MP3 and Opus), covers, genres, collections, the buy link and related albums. Artists: `GET /api/artists/{page}`.
- Music for a purpose (a mood, an instrument, background music, a classical composer): start with the collections, e.g. `GET /api/albums?collection=background_mix`.
- Every album page (https://magnatune.com/artists/albums/<sku>/) carries schema.org MusicAlbum JSON-LD with its tracks and an Offer (price and buy link), and links its JSON with `<link rel="alternate" type="application/json">`.
- Limit: 120 requests per minute per IP.

## Buying an album for a person

Every album costs $8 and the money goes straight to the musician through PayPal.

1. Find an album: GET https://magnatune.com/api/albums?q=... (or genre=, collection=, artist=), then GET /api/albums/{sku} to check its tracks and previews.
2. Give the person the album's buy_url (https://magnatune.com/buy/album?sku=SKU). They pay $8 on PayPal (card or PayPal account); the money goes straight to the musician. The agent never handles payment details.
3. After paying, the person sees a download key (also emailed to them). Lost keys: https://magnatune.com/buy/album/lostkey emails every key bought with an email address.
4. With the key, GET https://magnatune.com/api/albums/{sku}/downloads?key=KEY lists one download link per format (MP3, AAC, ALAC, FLAC, OGG, WAV); each is a zip of the whole album.
