Ash Ganley : Magic Season.
Masterfully nuanced aaa rock.
Magic Season is Ash's latest record (2011) and contains his most
engaging, addictive and potent songwriting to date. For Ash, this is what you
get after years of being a humble apprentice to many a disparate muse, absorbing
everything and anything musical, touring and recording with bands ranging from
Reggae to Rock to Funk to Folk and beyond, always pushing, always distilling it
down, finding your voice and searching for the elusive themes running between it
all.
Ash's influences are apparent on Magic Season, but you may have to blur
your ears to hear them, for they reveal themselves more as mood and character,
rather than stylistically. Kelly Joe Phelps, Tom Petty, Chris Whitley, Del
Amitri, Steve Earl. Cormac McCarthy, Sergio Leone, Enio Morricone, Robert
Natkin. They are all there, some hidden, some open. Call it Modern Americana,
New Roots Rock, call it Country music with city lyrics, or singer-songwriter
folk rock with a heavy current of desert-mescaline contemplation of fate, it's
all these things and more. Somehow dark yet positive, Magic Season is an album
of depth and nuance seldom heard on any level. Enjoy the magic!
