Bach Cello Suites on 8-String Guitar volume 2
Daniel Estrem's recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's Cello Suites 6,5 and 4 are in their original
keys and, as with Estrem's recording of Suites 1-3, are the same notes that
would be heard on the cello. It is widely believed that Suite 6 (BWV 1012) was
composed for a 5-string cello with an added treble string. The note range
required in the suite is extensive and it is written in more of a free form than
the others, with virtuosic and cadenza-like passages. Suite 5 (BWV 1011)
reflects more of a French influence than the other suites. The Prelude is a
French overture and the Courante and Gigue are in the French style, rather than
the Italian form of the other suites. Bach also wrote a lute version of this
suite (BWV 995) so he clearly didn't feel the music had to be loyal to one
particular instrument.
Suite 4 (BWV 1010) is technically demanding on both the cello and the guitar
since E-flat is a difficult key to play in for both instruments. On this
recording an alternative tuning is used which makes the suite more accessible.
There is a marvellously transformable quality in Bach's music that has much to
with his genius and certain aspects of his music sound modern as well as
ancient. Musicians are able to reinvent the music using different instruments
and sonorities. It's almost as if Bach stands outside of time.
