Reviving the tradition of medieval musical improvisation,Chordae comes across as music for its own sake, featuring beautiful melodies played on historic instruments by the gifted musicianTim Rayborn. In addition to being a performer, Tim is also a scholar of medieval cultures, so for this album he extrapolated specific playing techniques from illuminated medieval manuscripts and surviving European folk music practices. The strings are played with the nails, for instance, which makes for a more crisp and defined sound. A deeply melodic and authentic album, and an ideal one to have on in the background while working or studying.
