As promised two weeks ago, here is another batch of new releases on Magnatune.

Before I talk about the new releases, here is a bit about what's going on here:

GOOGLE CHECKOUT:
I'm putting the finishing touches on being able to buy stuff at Magnatune using Google Checkout. For those of you who don't have (or don't want to have) a Paypal account, this will be a way to use your credit card. Hopefully this will close the door on the "visa no more" chapter of our life.

IPHONE APP:
Apple rejected our iPhone app as competing with iTunes. We've made some modifications to hopefully appease them and resubmitted it to them. Hopefully they'll approve it this time.

ANDROID APP:
There is a really fantastic Android App (aka "Google Phone") for Magnatune now available.

NEWSLETTER CHANGES:
The email newsletter has changed (yet again) as I realized that with my previous format I repeated a lot of the albums in the email: first in my review, and then again with the album cover art and play button. Now, it's all integrated.

MORE COVER ART:
I've been fiddling with the artist pages at Magnatune, and now album art is much more prominently featured.

OUTLOOK EXPRESS LOVE:
People reading this email in outlook probably can't see the Adobe Flash audio player, so from now on there will always be a "click here if you can't read this message properly."

Description:Roots rock meets contemporary folk
Genre:Rock
Artist:Tom Paul
Album:Borrowed Time

Tom Paul is back with a new CD offering entitled "Borrowed Time". Tom wrote and recorded these songs about his experiences with substance abuse, addiction and recovery. Those familiar with the world of recovery will recognize the themes of surrender, open mindedness, honesty, total abstinence, and a higher power. Listeners who are "earth people" will gain some insight into what the addict or alcoholic faces as he works to get and stay sober. Everyone will find themselves humming these tunes after a couple of listens. This album may be more of a true rock record than his previous pop/rock efforts.

Tom's musicianship and vocals have continued to mature since his last release "There is no map" in 2003. The years 2004 to 2008 were dark times for Tom and he is back now stronger for the experience. This CD, like his previous works, is a celebration of life made more poignant by facing down his own demise. Tom was told early on that to write great songs you just need a few words and the truth. This album gives us an open and honest look at his experiences.

Description:Original melodic pieces
Genre:Classical
Artist:Gerard Satamian
Album:Forget Me Not

Gerard follows his heart, instinct, taste and musical ear instead of traditional musical or harmonic rules while composing. He aims for quality rather than quantity, releasing nothing unless he is totally committed to the piece. His interests lie in the Eastern music of Armenian Folk, Arabic, Romanian, Jewish (and alike), and also French Impressionists.

When Gerard started out composing these pieces between 2007 and 2008 they were for voice and piano, but they soon evolved into something more complicated, so he arranged them for flute, cello, violin and piano.

Playing with Gerard on this album are:
Heidi Kurz - flute
Evan Buttar - cello
Elvira Voskanyan - violin

Song # 7 is a beautiful piece dedicated to Gerard's mother.

Description:Eastern European women's vocal music
Genre:World
Artist:Kitka
Album:The Rusalka Cycle - Songs Between Worlds

In Slavic folklore, Rusalki are the restless spirits of women who have died unjust, untimely or unnatural deaths. They inhabit the waters, forests, and fields, luring people to them with their mesmerizing songs and wild laughter.

Performed by the eight powerful vocalists of Kitka, The Rusalka Cycle is a riveting dream-like journey that weaves traditional Eastern European folk song together with original music by Mariana Sadovska. This CD features Kitka singing as you’ve never heard them sing before. With stirring accompaniment by cellists Moses Sedler and Elaine Kreston, and percussionist Kevin Mummey.

Description:ethnic atmospheres, emotive soundscapes and ambient vistas
Genre:Electronica
Artist:Indidginus
Album:Kaleidoscope

Open, spacious and relaxed Kaleidoscope presents the listener with ethnic atmospheres, emotive soundscapes and ambient vistas. The intricate and evolving nature of the album keeps the ears open and the eyes wide.

Michael Martin of Indidginus has grown leaps and bounds musically over the past few years. As part of that, he felt that much of his older material no longer represented where he now is. His music was previously simpler and more beat oriented, and it's now much more nuanced and takes in many more influences and genres. As such, he rerecorded many of his older songs and along with much new material, decided to replace his previous 2 Magnatune albums (and one "singles" EP) with 3 new albums: "Kaleidoscope", "Align" and "Feast or Famine".

Description:Music played by hand on instruments made of wood
Genre:World
Artist:Fernwood
Album:Sangita

Fernwood, an all-acoustic instrumental group announces the release of their second album titled "Sangita". Following on the heels of their widely heralded debut release "Almeria', this 12-track offering greatly expands upon their previous work. Utilizing an expanded palette of world instruments, Gayle Ellett (Djam Karel) and Todd Montgomery create music that is both familiar and exotic, lush and melodic, warm and inspirational. They create contemporary acoustic music that is beautiful and elegant, with a strong cinematic and pan-cultural feel. By playing traditional World instruments in new and interesting ways, they have created a new hybrid style that is uniquely their own.

GUITAR PLAYER Magazine described their music as "Wonderfully melodic, expertly layered, masterfully interwoven, luscious yet rootsy."
And their debut release "Almeria" was chosen as "#4 ALBUM OF THE YEAR" at nationally syndicated Echoes Radio.

Montgomery and Ellen achieve a rich and inviting sound on "Sangita" with the use of a wide variety of traditional wooden folk instrument s such as: Irish and Greek bouzouki, sitar, dilruba, ruan, oud, gobijen, jal tarang, dotara, tenor banjo, harmonium, acoustic guitar, violin, upright bass, and other instruments. Contemporary Americana and Old World styles are merged and blended together into something new and beautiful. The arrangements and orchestration are sophisticated and dynamic. Produced with what can only be described as a truly golden tone, "Sangita" is a marvelously cohesive offering.
