    This week's back-of-the-cupboard is:

  • Ralph Rousseau Meulenbroeks: virtuoso viola da gamba
    http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/meulenbroeks-gambomania

The viola da gamba is a 6 (or 7) string bowed instrument, similar to the cello, but with tied frets and a greater range afforded by the additional strings. The sound is also more organic and breathy than a cello, as the strings are made from animal gut, compared to the metal strings on a cello.

On this album Meulenbroeks presents a variety of solo gamba repertoire, well recorded and sensitively played. An excellent introduction to the solo viola da gamba. Both beautiful and meditative.

    Album:Silicon Sandwich

This album will make you dance, close your eyes and scratch your head at times. With the pulsating beat of "No Time", the haunting atmosphere of "It Feels Like This", the love story of a robot and a spoon in "Curved Side Of The Spoon", and the hunting man-eaters in "Cannibals", just to name a few tracks.

SILICON SANDWICH is a digital musical trip of a different kind.

Yes, you can have your SILICON SANDWICH anyway you like it!

    Album:Concordias Finest

In a small place located in the rural south, the Black Belt Region, bottom of the Delta, there emerged a click of young men. Certain circumstances brought these young men together, forming what is now known as Highway Entertainment Records, specializing in tight logos, spectacular beats, and lyricists with nice flows. The camp includes: Rob, Nate, ill Friss, Joe Bear, Clay Mac, Grip, KC, Lil James, and Lloyd. Pay close attention, these guys could very well be the next multi-platinum rappers in the hip hop world.

    Artist:The Great Mooklaa Herashaa
    Album:Open Sezame

A darkly pleasing romp through industrial/electronic/hard-rock genres.

The artist (The Great Mooklaa Herashaa) writes:

I am attempting to take the listener on a journey, a journey that mirrors my own, in that it follows my own inner search for the music inside to let itself out into reality.

I start with more classic structured songs like Stomp and Discipline which stem from my own past in gothic and industrial music with a hint of BDSM bondage for flare.

Then, add definite parts and arrangements in more experimental pieces with more emotion and unusual sounds and beats of their own such as Multch, Angel and Bloodsong.

Finally, into the realm of trance like ambient states through pieces like Host Of Siafu and an almost psychedelic journey into the underworld itself with Syclicle and The Sterile InsomNiac.

My hope is that the listener when finished will have the feeling of discovering that something special that only music can bring.

    Description:colorful classical guitar
    Genre:Classical
    Artist:Daniel Estrem
    Album:Reverie

This collection is a well-conceived recording of guitar artistry. Daniel Estrem performs his new arrangements for classical guitar that draw in the listener with his tonal variety and understated technique. The elegant interpretations breathe a unique vitality into these evocative masterworks.

The music selected for the 80 minute program takes the listener on a dreamlike journey of introspection and imparts a sense of tranquility. The contemplative pieces, mostly written for keyboard, retain their idiomatic flavor and musical integrity when performed on classical guitar. The charming voice of the classical ukulele can be heard on two of the 31 selections.

    Description:virtuoso viola da gamba
    Genre:Classical
    Artist:Ralph Rousseau Meulenbroeks
    Album:Gambomania

When Ralph Rousseau Meulenbroeks released his first album, he was taken by surprise at the extraordinarily warm welcome it received. A well known Dutch music critic even coined the term "Gambomaniac" to desribe Meulenbroeks' passion for the instrument, and since then the artist has received numerous requests for a follow-up album. Gambomania is that album, and it features works by Hume, Marais, Abel, D'Hervelois, and Schenck. It's a richly resonant instrumental recording of Meulenbroeks' solo playing, and it makes apparent why Meulenbroeks' releationship with this instrument is sometimes likened to a "love affair." Sensitive, passionate, dynamic.
