Magnatune: introspective renaissance

  • iNTROSPEKT: intelligent, varied, beat-driven electronica.
    http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/introspekt-orbit

Touching on genres such as big beat, breaks, down tempo, dub and drum & bass, this album aims to please the heavy hearted and psychedelic mind.

  • Paul Beier: solo lute of the Italian renaissance.
    http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/beier-knights

Until recently it was thought that there was one "Knight of the Lute", Laurencinus Romanus, Il Cavaliere del Liuto. New discoveries and an up-to-date biography suggest that there were two people: Lorenzino Tracett and Vincenzo Pinti. This album of renaissance lute plays the music of this rarely recorded great lute repertoire.

  • Askold Buk: guitar-driven, groove-oriented feel-good jazz/r&b tunes
    http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/askold-askold

Melodic, guitar-driven, groove-oriented jazz/r&b tunes. Buk has scored numerous episodes of the Emmy-winning PBS documentary series Frontline, as well as 20/20 (ABC), Primetime (ABC) and In Search of America (ABC). This is his debut CD.

From the back of the cupboard:

  • Les Filles de Sainte Colombe: viol & harpsichord music
    http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/filles-german

Sombre, rich, structured and flowing music from an exceptionally rich period of early music. This style of ensemble music is often not well known by classical music aficionados, so I'm hoping to introduce you to it.

  • Amelia Cuni: contemporary Indian Dhrupad singing
    http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/cuni-amore

Be sure to check out "Danza D'Amore", a Dhrupad raga written by Amelia, sung in Italian, which stunned me when I saw it performed live last summer while visiting Berlin. Also be sure to watch the *amazing* video at the bottom of her home page, where she sings and dances behind a circular projection screen. http://magnatune.com/artists/cuni

ps: we've been at the Berkeley Early Music Festival http://bfx.berkeley.edu/ all week, where we've both re-met our existing musicians, and made lots of new connections to bring you new works. Getting home at 1am, I neglected to hit the "release" button on our 4th album this week, which is why I'm bringing 3 new releases this week, and 2 from the back of the cupboard. Next week, I'll make it up to you with 5 new album releases.

Album:I Cavalieri del Liuto - The Knights of the Lute

Originally it was thought that there was one "Knight of the Lute", Laurencinus Romanus, Il Cavaliere del Liuto, Eques Romanus. After new discoveries and an up-to-date biography of "The Knights of the Lute" by Mariagrazia Carlone, published in the Journal of the American Lute Society, we now know that there were two. Lorenzino Tracetti, servant of Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este until 1572, and the pious Vincenzo Pinti, resident at the palace of the Vatican Vice-chancellor under Cardinals Alessandro Farnese and Montalto (Alessandro Peretti), until his death in 1608.

As for attributing the music, it would be very hard, if not impossible, to tell which of the works recorded here were by Tracetti and which may have been by Pinti. Neither of these composers, it seems, was ever involved directly in the publication or dissemination of their works.

While the ambiguity between the two Roman knights is still maintained, the only revision that seems necessary is to the title: no longer singular, it now celebrates "The Knights of the Lute."

    Description:guitar-driven, groove-oriented feel-good jazz/r&b tunes
    Genre:Jazz
    Artist:Askold Buk
    Album:Askold Buk

"I think a lot of today's instrumental music takes itself so seriously that it intimidates people - it's quite different from the great instrumentals I remember that were catchy, feel-good tunes with no pretense," observes guitarist Askold Buk. "My goal is to recapture that vibe by writing music that is as much fun to listen to as it is to play."

Buk certainly creates a fun, unpretentious mood on his critically-acclaimed debut album, which is chock full of melodic, guitar-driven, groove-oriented jazz/r&b tunes.
