The music for this program has been taken from all of the seven surviving books of vihuela music, with at least one piece from each book being represented. Soprano Carrie Henneman Shaw is the featured singer with Edward Martin, Phillip Rukavina, Rockford Mjos, and Tyler Kaiser playing the vihuelas.

The vihuela is a guitar-like instrument that was developed and used in Spain during the 16th century. The most popular stringed instrument in Europe was the lute, but, because of the association of the lute with the Moorish population in Spain, the Spanish musicians were not allowed to use the lute. In order to compose and play the polyphonic music that was popular in the day, they developed an instrument that was tuned and played like a lute, but did not look like a lute: and the vihuela was born.

The music on this recording is adapted from works that survive in the sixteenth-century printed vihuela books. There is at least one piece from each of the surviving seven sources, and ten of the seventeen works include voice, sung by Carrie Henneman Shaw. The arrangements have been made by ensemble member Tyler Kaiser, closely modelled on the music of the original tablatures, constructing the instrumental parts with reference to the original vocal music where relevant, following principles learned from study of the Vallet lute quartets, and applying embellishment drawn from theoretical sources such as Diego Ortiz's Tratado de glosas of 1553. The six pavanas of Luis Milán (tracks 1, 5, 6, 8, 12 and 15) have been converted from solo pieces to ensemble works with glosas added and represent the kind of solemn dance music that was used as processionals in formal entries in Spanish courts and households, as well as for social dancing.
