If you don't yet have any Indian Classical music in your collection, the simple but nuanced Ragas of sitar virtuoso Jay Kishor are a great place to start. Kishor is known for exanding the boundaries of traditional music through collaboartion with Western artists, yet he's also considered a master of the austere Dhrupad style—one distinguished by its slower tempo, slower melodic development, and lack of unnecessary ornamentation. This live recording of two traditional Ragas (each about 30 minutes long) captures Kishor's deeply poetic approach to this enduring form of "music as prayer."
